Winter wellness tips

A cigarette with a scarf around it next to a mug of hot chocolate and a hot water bottle. The words 'Winter Wellness' are written in the corner.

As the festive season approaches and winter sets in, it's a time of celebration, reflection, and often, increased stress for some people. For many, this period can also be a powerful motivator to make positive lifestyle changes—like quitting smoking. Not only does stopping smoking improve your physical health, but it also boosts your mental wellbeing, helps you save money, and reduces pressure on the NHS during the colder months.

Why winter is a great time to quit smoking

Winter brings unique challenges to our health, from increased respiratory infections to seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Smoking exacerbates these risks, making it harder for your body to fight off illness and recover from cold-related conditions.

Quitting smoking now can:

  • Improve lung function and circulation, reducing your risk of flu and pneumonia.
  • Boost your immune system, helping you stay well during the colder months.
  • Enhance mental wellbeing, as nicotine withdrawal symptoms subside and your body begins to heal.
  • Save money—the average smoker spends around £90 a week on cigarettes, which could be redirected to festive treats or heating bills.

Winter wellbeing tips

Quitting smoking is just one part of staying well this winter. Here are some additional tips to support your overall wellbeing:

  • Stay active: Even short walks in daylight can boost mood and energy.
  • Eat well: Focus on immune-boosting foods like citrus, garlic, and leafy greens.
  • Get vaccinated: Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are especially important for smokers.
  • Sleep and rest: Maintain a regular sleep schedule to combat winter fatigue.
  • Connect with others: Reach out to friends, family, or support groups.
  • Practice self-care: Use mindfulness, journaling, or a self-care box to manage stress.
  • Seek help when needed: Services like Hull Samaritans (call 116 123) are available 24/7.

Myth-busting corner

We hear a lot of misconceptions about smoking, so we thought it was about time to set the record straight! Let’s explore the common myths around smoking and quitting that we hear, and what the real truth is!

Success story

SmokeFree Hull client

“It was really great knowing that I could chat to someone each week and share how well I was doing. I looked forward to blowing on the CO reader as I knew that my Advisor Chelsea would see that I was smokefree, as I didn’t want to let her down. You do need the support and it’s really good having someone to talk to throughout the journey. I enjoyed chatting with Chelsea, she made me feel like I had known her for years, she was so supportive by telling me how well I had done too. I won’t even think about puffing on a cigarette again, it’s a slippery slope, you’ll start by only having half, then a full one, and then you are back to smoking again, so no thank you, I’m proud to say I’m now smokefree.”

Healthy recipe

A bowl of chickpeas Air Fryer Chickpeas from SmokeFree Hull Trainer Karen

When people quit smoking, they often snack more because nicotine suppresses appetite and influences dopamine levels, which affects your feelings of reward and satisfaction. Without nicotine, the body craves alternative sources of comfort and stimulation, and food, (especially sugary or high-calorie snacks), can temporarily fill that gap. Nicotine withdrawal also triggers stress and oral fixation, making the act of eating feel soothing. Having healthy snacks readily available is important because it helps manage cravings without leading to weight gain or unhealthy habits, while providing essential nutrients to support the body during the adjustment period.

If you’re looking for a savoury snack that’s nutritious, quick and cheap to make then this recipe is for you!

Ingredients

  • Can of chickpeas
  • Olive oil
  • Seasoning of your choice e.g. salt, pepper, garlic salt, dried herbs

Method

  1. Rinse the chickpeas in cold water through a strainer then dry thoroughly on kitchen paper

  2. Place the chickpeas in a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and toss until coated.

  3. Add your choice of seasonings and toss again.

  4. Pour the seasoned chickpeas into the air fryer basket in a single layer.

  5. Air fry at 200 degrees C for 13-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until the chickpeas are crispy and golden brown.

  6. Enjoy!
